A Los Angeles County grand jury has indicted Nick Reiner on charges of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment adds the allegation that he planned the attack by lying in wait. The grand jury, convened in secret, delivered the indictment on July 20. It was unsealed when Nick Reiner, aged 32, pleaded not guilty.
Rob Reiner, a director, actor, and known figure in Hollywood, along with his wife, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14. Nick Reiner was arrested within hours of the incident and charged two days later. The grand jury indictment is crucial because it bypasses the preliminary hearing process in California, where evidence is usually publicly presented.
The accusation of lying in wait suggests premeditation. If proven, alongside a murder conviction, it could make Reiner eligible for the death penalty. The decision to seek the death penalty has not been finalized according to the prosecutors.
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case, it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
Details of the Indictment and Current Proceedings
The unsealed indictment provides limited new information as the case remains largely confidential. There is no explanation for how or why Nick Reiner was lying in wait. Prosecutors have not elaborated beyond stating that the victims were stabbed. The indictment includes the use of a deadly weapon, a knife, which could lead to a harsher sentence.
Meanwhile, Nick Reiner is requesting funds from a trust his parents set up for him. He needs these funds to support his legal defense. According to his court petition, trustees have unjustly denied him access to the funds. The petition clarifies that the trust holds at least $1.5 million, though the exact amount remains undisclosed.
“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,” the petition states. “But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue.” Reiner aims to rehire criminal defense lawyer Alan Jackson, after initially being represented by him. The representation changed when Reiner’s siblings decided to stop funding his defense, leaving a public defender to assume the role. A hearing regarding the petition will take place next week. The LA County Public Defender’s Office, now representing Reiner, has not commented on the indictment.
