Millions of Americans face challenges in achieving restful sleep, but the issue may be more complex than just bedtime habits. A cognitive neuroscientist recently shared insights into how the brain’s sense of safety affects sleep quality. According to Yousuf Aslam, emotional and psychological factors play a key role in sleep regulation, alongside biological elements.

The Complex Regulation of Sleep

Aslam, an expert in neuromechanics and neuroscience, highlighted the interplay between various factors that control sleep. Two primary biological systems, the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake homeostasis, govern sleep patterns.

The circadian rhythm, an internal 24-hour clock, is controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus within the hypothalamus. This system adjusts melatonin levels based on light exposure. Sleep-wake homeostasis measures the body’s sleep needs via adenosine, a chemical that accumulates during waking hours and decreases during sleep. Caffeine can block adenosine receptors, promoting alertness.

However, sleep involves more than biological components. Aslam emphasized that emotional regulation and stress significantly influence sleep quality. Heightened cortisol from stress can disrupt normal sleep processes.

Stress-Related Sleep Disruption

Aslam identified two key stress-induced sleep disturbances. The first relates to unresolved past experiences, with the brain becoming agitated over feelings of unachievement or past pain. The second involves future anxiety, where the brain anticipates negative events, leading to stress.

Both scenarios result in the brain feeling ‘unsafe,’ triggering the sympathetic nervous response, commonly known as the fight or flight response. This elevates heart rate and brain activity, making restful sleep challenging.

Promoting Relaxation for Sleep

For sleep to occur, the brain needs to slow its activity, moving from beta waves associated with stress to alpha waves tied to relaxation. This shift facilitates deeper sleep stages.

Individuals struggling with sleep often use devices late at night, subconsciously tiring themselves out. Aslam observed that many resort to mobile phones to exhaust themselves before sleep.

A Helpful Nightly Exercise

Aslam recommends a gratitude-writing exercise to ease underlying stress. This involves listing three daily gratitudes, three future gratitudes, and four personal appreciations, fostering a sense of security.

Conducting this exercise before bed aids in processing thoughts, helping sleep occur without stress. Writing the list by hand, rather than digitally, enhances its effectiveness by altering the brain’s perception.

Aslam suggests reviewing the list within 45 minutes of waking, avoiding immediate engagement with digital devices to prevent cortisol-induced stress responses. Delaying caffeinated drinks also reduces cortisol spikes.

He emphasizes that improved sleep enhances overall mental health, including focus, clarity, and memory.
