The United States advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup, defeating Australia 2-0 on Friday. This victory, achieved without their key player Christian Pulisic who was out due to a calf injury, marked their second win in the expanded 48-team tournament.
Folarin Balogun expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities despite Pulisic’s absence. “CP is a fantastic player,” Balogun stated, acknowledging Pulisic’s leadership and quality. He noted how the team showed they could still perform and secure a positive result.
Pulisic, who has contributed 33 goals in 87 international matches and currently plays for AC Milan, missed this match. Historically, losing such a central player might have disrupted the U.S. team’s World Cup campaign. However, substantial developments have occurred since the team last hosted the World Cup in 1994.
In contrast to 1994, when the U.S. progressed as one of the best third-place teams, they now enjoy consecutive victories at this World Cup for the first time since 1930. The team has almost equaled their record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup, with six goals so far, showcasing contributions from various players.
One noteworthy performance came from Alex Freeman, the youngest member at 21 and son of NFL star Antonio Freeman. Freeman extended the U.S. lead to 2-0 in the 43rd minute with his first career World Cup goal. His header, from a deflected shot by Sergiño Dest, followed a video review confirmation. Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Freeman’s rapid progression and eagerness to learn.
The U.S. initially scored in the 11th minute, with Balogun making a strategic run and delivering a pass that deflected off Australia’s Cameron Burgess, ending in an own goal. Balogun highlighted his aim of creating opportunities, stating that forcing errors like these is equivalent to scoring.
Though the Americans did not score in the second half, their dominance in the first half was undeniable. Australia’s coach, Tony Popovic, acknowledged the U.S. team’s clear quality, power, and athleticism.
As the U.S. team gains victories, expectations rise. Despite early success, Pochettino stressed the importance of maintaining belief and consistent performance. The absence of Pulisic didn’t prevent the U.S. from advancing, showing the depth of their roster.
Freeman remarked on the team’s talent, highlighting Ricardo Pepi’s impressive performance as evidence of their strong squad. “We know how vital Christian is, but we also have great players like Pepi who can step up,” he said.
