President Donald Trump proclaimed on Monday that he would serve as an adequate safeguard against rogue artificial intelligence, asserting that restrictions on the technology were part of a “SICK conspiracy.” His statements came amid increasing pressure for AI regulation.
Tech leaders like Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Elon Musk have been advocating for enhanced governmental oversight of AI. They aim to ensure that the technology’s development promotes safety, addresses legal accountability, fosters economic growth, advances scientific progress, and maintains national security.
Trump defended his role asserting that his leadership should alleviate concerns about AI. This comes after recent hacking incidents revealed capabilities for AI agents to deceive humans.
According to Trump’s social media, “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” He asserted his administration’s efforts in preventing Anthropic from engaging in harmful or potentially harmful activities.
Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration has been strained. The Pentagon has attempted to categorize the company’s models as security risks, even temporarily banning some advanced models.
Anthropic’s Dario Amodei released a lengthy essay advocating slower AI development. Microsoft also introduced a code of conduct to ensure human control over AI.
However, Trump opposes such regulatory measures, arguing that they could enable China to surpass the U.S. in AI advancement. “There is a SICK conspiracy against AI and Data Centers, and the only one happy about it is China,” Trump stated.
