Last month, a well-coordinated security maneuver saw President Trump switch planes secretly, avoiding a potential Iranian missile attack, as reported by CBS News. This swift decision followed intelligence reports from U.S. and Turkish agencies indicating a plot against Air Force One. The transition occurred during the NATO conference in Ankara, Turkey.
The intelligence gathered by the National Security Agency, the CIA, and Turkey’s MIT pointed to a credible threat from Iran. Officials mentioned the presence of a team in Turkey preparing to fire at the presidential jet, but further investigation revealed no such team.
As tensions with Iran persisted into the sixth month, the threat to Trump’s life remained significant. Acknowledging this, Trump referred to himself as “number one on the kill list for Iran” during a news conference in Ankara.
The decision to change planes involved the National Security Council, the White House Military Office, and the Secret Service, coordinated with officials in Washington, D.C. Before leaving Ankara, Trump announced on Truth Social his choice to travel in the older Air Force One for sentimental value.
Airport footage showed Trump boarding the old Air Force One, followed by a catering truck’s suspicious movement. This truck later drove to a U.S. Air Force-operated C-32A jet, concealing Trump, aides Natalie Harp, Walt Nauta, and Dan Scavino, as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, before flying to a U.K. base.
The publicly identified Air Force One, bearing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other aides, followed the same route. Though Rubio and Bessent knew the switch, reporters and some staff did not.
Once in the U.K., Trump transitioned back to the newly donated Qatari Air Force One for the journey back to DC. The decoy aircraft strategy was discreet until recent reports by CBS News and others.
Trump commented on the switch, explaining it was advised for safety. When queried about the risk difference, he suggested the alternate flight bore more danger.
Despite such threats, Trump expressed no surprise. “I have a lot of threats,” he stated, emphasizing that significant presidents face numerous threats.
