Trump’s Immigration Policy and Its Impact

Former President Donald Trump has returned to office, committing to a significant overhaul of U.S. immigration policy. This initiative targets both legal and unauthorized immigration.

In January 2026, the Trump administration announced a suspension on visa processing for citizens from 75 countries. This action was part of several immigration restrictions enacted since Trump’s return. According to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the suspension focused on individuals potentially classified as a ‘public charge.’ This term refers to those dependent on public benefits for essential needs.

However, a federal court invalidated the visa suspension in August 2026. Furthermore, the administration temporarily halted immigrant visa appointments globally in the same month for consular officer training. This pause is anticipated to end by early to mid-September.
