President Donald Trump introduces policies offering direct financial assistance to Americans, including $90 checks for seniors to offset Medicare premiums and $500 Obamacare refunds. A promise of $5,000 is also put forth if Republicans retain congressional control. Recently, Trump announced an $8 billion ‘fuel relief’ program to aid farmers coping with high diesel costs.
Despite these measures, Trump’s approval on economic issues lags. A NBC News poll indicates 58% strongly disapprove of his inflation and cost of living management, a rise from 44% earlier. The general disapproval rate has now reached 73%, with approval falling to 27%.
The USDA’s $8 billion program aims to help farmers manage rising diesel prices, currently above $6 per gallon due to Iran-related disruptions. Farmers like John Boyd express concerns about surviving these costs. Meanwhile, Medicare premium checks began distribution on October 8, and $500 Obamacare refunds started in late September. However, financing Trump’s proposed $5,000 checks is questioned by experts and lawmakers.
Polling emphasizes the economy and affordability as primary voter concerns. An NBC News poll of 19,135 adults reveals 71% believe the nation is on a ‘wrong track’, and 66% disapprove of Trump’s presidency due to economic worries. Inflation worries are prevalent, with 67% viewing gas prices as a serious issue. This follows a Bureau of Labor Statistics report showing inflation at 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August.
In a recent Economist/YouGov poll, conducted from October 2-5, 37% of 1,381 voters ranked inflation as the top election concern. However, Trump minimizes the issue of ‘affordability’, conflicting with most voters, as noted in a Harris Poll for The Guardian showing 96% of Republicans acknowledge an affordability ‘crisis’.
