Trump contends that severe Canadian wildfires result from mismanagement. His statements grew stronger as smoke drifted from Canada, affecting air quality in states like Michigan and New York. On July 17, Trump accused Canada of negligence regarding the smoke’s southward drift, suggesting the pollution costs be added to tariffs on Canadian imports.
Responding to Trump’s accusations, Prime Minister Mark Carney communicated Canada’s efforts to manage the wildfires, as reported by CBC News. Carney explained to Trump the sheer expanse of Canada’s forest land and the extensive drought conditions contributing to the fires.
