Retired Lt. Gen. Chun In-bum, the former commander of South Korea’s Special Warfare Command, expressed concerns about the move. He remarked, North Korea and China would be the ones most pleased by this.
His comment reflects apprehensions within the region about the geopolitical implications of scaling back military collaboration.
The exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, involved a live-fire training session at the Cherokee Range in South Korea in 2025. These drills have been significant in maintaining regional stability and demonstrating military readiness.
