President Donald Trump recently shared a manipulated image of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. The image showed them waving as they prepared to board an Air Force One that appeared vandalized with graffiti. This occurred months after another post by Trump, showing the Obamas as primates, was met with significant backlash and subsequently removed.
The image depicted the Obamas smiling next to a customized presidential plane. The aircraft featured graffiti that included the Democrat’s campaign slogan “Yes We Can,” the name “Obama,” and the acronym “BLM,” representing Black Lives Matter. Additionally, Arabic graffiti on the plane included the phrase “alhamdulillah,” which translates to “praise be to God.”
Graffiti in such contexts often carries a connotation of crime and urban decay, commonly linked to racist imagery involving Black people. Trump has a history of making provocative, sometimes racist remarks, including questioning Obama’s birthplace and making derogatory statements about predominantly Black countries. His posts often incite anger on his platform, Truth Social.
Previously, during Black History Month, Trump posted a racist image of the Obamas as primates, which he later removed after receiving condemnation from civil rights leaders and Republican senators. Trump did not apologize, attributing the post to a staffer instead.
The recent image gains significance as Trump took his first flight last week on a new Air Force One, a customized Boeing 747-800 costing $400 million, given by Qatar. The new design replaced the former light blue with a navy-blue bottom and red-gold stripes.
After delivering a speech in Washington to celebrate Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Trump spent Sunday at his Virginia golf club. He planned to travel to Turkey for a NATO summit shortly after. The White House and the Obamas’ spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.
Trump also previously posted a manipulated image of Obama’s presidential library in Chicago, suggesting it was surrounded by a wasteland and topped with garbage. He criticized the library, referring to it as a future ‘Mecca’ for those opposing America.
The Air Force One post was part of a series of messages by Trump on Truth Social. Another included an image of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, accompanied by a comment implying she requested a photo with Trump persistently. This led to diplomatic tensions, with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceling a trip to Washington, and Meloni dismissing Trump’s story, stating that her and Italy’s dignity remained intact.
