Trump Faces Declining Support Among Millennials in Recent Polls

Recent polls reveal a decrease in President Donald Trump’s approval rating among millennials, part of a wider trend of declining support among younger Americans. According to a poll by Economist/YouGov, only 26% of those aged 30 to 44 approve of Trump’s performance as of mid-August, a drop from 29% the previous week. This marks the fifth consecutive week of stable or declining approval in this age group.

Overall, Trump’s approval stands at 35%, with 61% disapproving of his presidential performance. The survey included 1,611 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3.4%.

White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales responded by highlighting policy achievements like middle-class tax cuts, reduced prescription drug costs, border security, and crime reduction. Authorities mentioned an FBI report showing a more than 9% drop in violent crime in 2025. Additionally, the White House highlighted successes such as sustained zero migrant releases at the border and a 3.1% annual drop in prescription drug prices as significant achievements.

Importance of Millennial Votes

The millennial generation, defined as those born from 1981 to 1996, has become the largest age demographic, surpassing baby boomers according to Pew Research Center data. Both Trump’s and former Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaigns are making concerted efforts to attract millennial voters by utilizing digital media platforms during the 2024 campaign cycle.

Key Observations from the Poll

The Economist/YouGov poll indicates that younger Americans, particularly those aged 18 to 29, hold a negative view of several aspects of Trump’s presidency. Only 30% from this age group approve of his job performance, while 67% disapprove. Among 30-to-44-year-olds, 26% approve, and 70% disapprove.

Regarding foreign policy, only 24% of those aged 18 to 29 approve of Trump’s handling, with approval dropping to 21% among millennials. On tariffs, 25% of the younger age group approve, while approval among millennials is 19%.

This drop is significant as Trump approaches the 2026 midterm elections with an overall low approval rating. An earlier YouGov report stated that 33% of Americans approved of Trump’s performance, whereas 62% disapproved. The recent 35% approval is a slight rise, yet the decline among millennials is a crucial concern in Trump’s polling data.

Comparative Poll Data

An Echelon Insights survey reported Trump’s overall approval at 40%, with a disapproval rate of 59%. Among 18 to 34-year-olds, approval is 28%, while disapproval is 72%. For those aged 35 to 49, approval stands at 40%, and disapproval at 57%. Conducted in mid-August, this poll sampled 1,002 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3.4%.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll published earlier shows an overall approval rating of 33% for Trump, with a disapproval rating of 64%. Conducted with 1,166 U.S. adults, it holds a margin of error of 3%.
