The long-awaited trailer for Disney-Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ is here, featuring favorites like Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack. The film, which also stars Greta Lee and Conan O’Brien, hits theaters on June 19.
With Woody, Buzz, and the rest of Pixar’s beloved characters returning, they now confront one of their toughest challenges yet: technology. Bonnie, now eight years old, is one of the few children in her neighborhood still engaging with toys rather than devices. To help her connect with peers, her parents gift her a kid-friendly tablet, Lilypad. This device mirrors the design of the LeapFrog brand.
For the toys, including abandoned ones from other children, the introduction of Lilypad marks a significant turning point. They learn a harsh reality: the era of toys might be ending.

While Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return to their iconic roles, ‘Toy Story 5’ shifts focus. Joan Cusack’s Jessie becomes the central figure, leading the charge against Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee. This story may seem a calculated step by Disney to extend the ‘Toy Story’ franchise. Yet, the plot offers a relevant narrative beyond commercial interests. Surprisingly, the film develops a nuanced argument instead of simply vilifying technology.
Jessie’s journey is central to the storyline, allowing her to shine as she navigates the technological world. Cusack’s voice performance brings depth, adding emotional layers to the story. Though familiarity with previous ‘Toy Story’ films enhances the experience, the movie remains accessible to new viewers.

Many familiar faces such as Rex, Hamm, Bo Peep, and Forky appear alongside new characters. Conan O’Brien voices Smarty Pants, a training toy that adds comic relief. The diverse cast includes Keanu Reeves, Bonnie Hunt, Craig Robinson, and Kristen Schaal.
Acclaimed filmmakers Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris co-wrote and directed the movie. Returning with his legendary touch, Randy Newman composed the score. Taylor Swift’s original song, ‘I Knew It, I Knew You,’ concludes the film.

The Verdict
The film may not equal the original trilogy’s magic but surpasses its predecessor from 2019. ‘Toy Story 5’ skillfully incorporates technology themes while delivering classic Pixar entertainment.
Rated PG for thematic elements and some humor, the movie runs for 1 hour and 42 minutes and is currently in theaters.
