Tony Romo and CBS Sports have decided to end their collaboration following Romo’s arrest for operating while impaired. This decision was anticipated after Romo’s legal issues and subsequent plea deal earlier this year. There is a belief that Romo will have another opportunity in broadcasting, akin to his multiple comebacks with the Dallas Cowboys. His return depends on his desire to rejoin the field.
Romo was taken into custody in Milwaukee due to impaired driving. In a public comment, CBS Sports expressed gratitude for Romo’s contributions over the past nine years and wished him well for the future. They confirmed J.J. Watt’s continued partnership with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the season.
Romo shared his perspective, expressing pride in his achievements at CBS Sports. He noted that he always aims to give his best and now plans to take a break to focus on his health and family before seeking new opportunities. Romo remains appreciative of the support from CBS Sports, family, friends, and the NFL community.
A source mentioned that Romo and CBS Sports reached a financial arrangement as part of their separation, though specifics were not disclosed. Romo had a 10-year contract worth $180 million signed in 2020. At the time of departure, the remaining value of the contract was nearly $70-$75 million.
Despite the setback, Romo has the potential to return to the broadcasting arena. His reputational impact due to the arrest could paradoxically increase his visibility, offering a pathway back. Other sports analysts, like Charles Barkley and Al Michaels, also managed to return to television after facing legal issues.
Romo is currently addressing the legal repercussions of his arrest, including a revoked driving license for six months, an alcohol assessment program, installation of an ignition interlock device, and completion of court-related fees. Over time, he may reconcile with his professional role once the sports industry deems his debt paid.
