California Democrat gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer shared a video with transgender athlete AB Hernandez, backing the teen’s pursuit of more state titles in girls’ track and field. The video, posted on Friday, quickly gained traction on social media, attracting diverse reactions.
The video resonated with many liberal users who support transgender rights, including comedian Stacy Cay. However, it faced criticism, especially from conservative circles.
Republican candidate Steve Hilton criticized Steyer’s stance, arguing it’s disconnected from the views of most California families and youth. Hilton, speaking to Fox News Digital, described Steyer’s position as extremely radical.
The role of a governor is to safeguard Californians and ensure their protection against harmful influences,” Steyer stated in the video, emphasizing his commitment to safety.
In the video, Hernandez discussed personal experiences of being “outed” and “doxed,” expressing a need for safety and protection. Steyer assured Hernandez of his support.
Hernandez is competing in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championships, with strong performances in long jump, triple jump, and high jump. In a unique policy, any female athlete finishing behind Hernandez is awarded a higher place, adjusting Hernandez’s podium positions. This approach will persist in the upcoming state final.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday night, with Hernandez aiming to excel as a high school competitor for the last time.
