Time magazine faces criticism for its cover story featuring Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner. The June 8 issue displays a photo of Platner, a Democrat competing in Maine’s Senate primary. The headline reads, “Party Crasher: The rise of scandal-plagued Democrat Graham Platner.”
Time’s social media post noted Platner’s rise as remarkable during an antiestablishment political moment. His candidacy compels the party to reassess its risks for gaining a strong contender.
Platner’s controversies include a tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism. Deleted posts from a Reddit account linked to Platner revealed vulgar remarks, and he identified as a “communist” and “socialist.” Additionally, he mocked a Purple Heart soldier nearly killed in combat.
At a news conference in Lewiston, Maine, on April 30, 2026, Graham Platner addressed these issues. However, Time’s portrayal of him as an outsider grabbing Democratic voters’ attention drew backlash.
The article highlights Platner’s past, including a Nazi tattoo, DUI from his post-military days, and hostile Reddit comments. Despite this, some conservatives on social media criticized the magazine’s cover.
Elizabeth Pipko, a former Trump spokesperson, pointed out the media’s seemingly inconsistent scrutiny of political figures. Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller referenced Time’s controversial “Man of the Year” decision in 1938, drawing comparisons.
Fox News contributor Joe Concha also chimed in on the debate. Requests for comment from Time and Platner went unanswered by Fox News Digital.
Platner recently became the Democrats’ presumptive nominee after Gov. Janet Mills ended her campaign. His primary win could position him against Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins. This race holds potential significant ramifications for the U.S. Senate’s power balance.
