The recent tragic shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in Idaho claimed three lives. Among them was a restaurant worker and a local man known for assisting others in sobriety. On Tuesday, authorities revealed the identities of those who perished when a 24-year-old gunman fired at the Twin Falls location. Police believe he acted alone and are still investigating his motive.
The victims include Ashley Garibay, 23, from Stockton, California; Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City; and Christopher Claunch, 59, from Hagerman, Idaho, situated about 28 miles northwest of Twin Falls.
On Tuesday night, hundreds from the community gathered in a local park to honor the victims. Candlelight vigils and heartfelt messages adorned large blue hearts on crosses as attendees showed support through prayer and solidarity. Teresa Yocham, a resident of Twin Falls, expressed that the violence affected her deeply, affirming the community’s resilience, “We are strong as a community and we come together in hard times.”
Remembering the Victims
Garibay was employed by the burger chain, where she participated in training new employees away from Stockton. Her family described her as adventurous, smart, and driven, highlighting her bright smile and contagious laugh. Working at In-N-Out was her first job, and she aspired to manage a store one day.
Claunch, affectionately known as “Toph,” overcame alcohol abuse through a local rehab program and dedicated himself to helping others do the same. According to his friend, Garren Taylor, “He was just a gift to anyone he came in contact with.” Claunch worked tirelessly at the rehab center, emphasizing his commitment to aiding people battling addiction.
Schultz, described as a talented artist and cherished alumni parent, was recognized by Gregory Glenn, pastoral administrator at the Madeleine Choir School in Salt Lake City. Schultz’s wife, Reinette, suffered injuries during the incident, and her recovery continues in the hospital.
Affected individuals can receive support and reclaim personal items through a center set up by the police. City flags will remain at half-staff until the following week in remembrance of the victims.
Incident at In-N-Out Burger
The shooting on Saturday culminated with the gunman, Chad Williams, taking his life. Witnesses described a chaotic scene within the restaurant as shots rang out. A customer recounted waiting inside when shots erupted from the kitchen, prompting a staff member to advise her to take cover. Meanwhile, those in the drive-thru witnessed staff fleeing and a shooter being pursued as a man directed traffic.
During the incident, an off-duty state trooper and a civilian confronted Williams, steering him away from the restaurant. Steven Pixley, who was injured in the attack, was riding his motorcycle when a bullet pierced his arm, causing him to lose use of three fingers. His cousin, Shane Klaas, expressed optimism in Pixley’s attitude despite the challenges he faces.
“His attitude is wonderful, which is a big part of getting through this,” Klaas stated. “He’s laughing, he’s joking.” Pixley, who recently moved to Twin Falls and secured employment, was in the process of improving his life.
