The Youngest Victim of Mundelein Shooting Remembered for Kindness and Passion

The tragic events of last week’s mass shooting in Mundelein have left a profound impact on the community, particularly in the memory of Maclaine Schmidt. He was recognized as a gentle and kind young man with a love for cooking. At 22, Schmidt was employed in the restaurant industry within the Chicago area, particularly in Lake Bluff.

Among those who have paid tribute is Bruno Abate, a known restaurateur, entrepreneur, and activist. Through social media, Abate shared fond memories of Schmidt, referring to him as a ‘brilliant and passionate chef.’ Abate further described him as an ‘unbelievable young man,’ citing qualities such as kindness, genuineness, and humility.

The Mundelein police department has identified Bryan Schmidt, Maclaine’s father, as the perpetrator. On October 18, Bryan fatally shot his son and his own parents, James and Rebecca Schmidt, aged 80 and 77 respectively, as well as his girlfriend, 37-year-old Nicole A. Heiser from Antioch. He then ended his own life. This tragic discovery was made when police responded to a request for a well-being check from another family member who was unable to reach them.

Two handguns and suicide notes were retrieved from the scene, but the motive behind the killings remains under investigation. Police reported that five individuals were found deceased at the residence due to gunshot wounds.

Maclaine Schmidt had been working under Bruno Abate for two years, gaining experience in restaurant kitchens across the North Shore, as described in a fundraiser narrative on GoFundMe. This campaign, which has raised over $17,000, aims to assist his surviving family members with costs related to funeral arrangements, counseling, and legal support.

The Lake County coroner’s office has stated that Schmidt’s remains will undergo a transformation into soil by a Maryland-based company called Earth Funeral. Meanwhile, arrangements for his grandparents and father are still being finalized. Visitation for Nicole A. Heiser is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee. A Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Gurnee.
