Instantly, she suspected her stepmother, Ashley Benefield, a former ballerina. Eva shared that she knew of Ashley’s numerous accusations against her father, painting him in a negative light. Ashley’s relationship with Doug was tumultuous. Eva recalled her father expressing frustration over accusations against him. Despite Doug’s initial decision to leave the marriage, he stayed in Florida for his younger daughter Emerson’s Easter celebration. Eva later contemplated if this decision altered their fate.
Doug married Ashley just 13 days after meeting her, a move that Eva found unsettling. Ashley’s behavior soon became concerning. She started isolating Eva from her father, blaming her for household issues, and even attempted to erase Eva’s late mother’s presence from their lives.
Tensions intensified as Ashley launched the American National Ballet with Doug’s support. When the company folded, Ashley moved to Florida, deepening the divide between father and daughter. Eventually, Doug’s life in Florida focused on mending relations with Ashley and being with their daughter Emerson.
The couple’s estrangement and a bitter custody battle culminated in Doug’s death at Ashley’s mother’s home in 2020. Ashley claimed self-defense, alleging psychological abuse, but prosecutors found no evidence supporting her allegations. Investigators did not see signs of physical abuse on Ashley after the incident.
During the trial, Eva faced Ashley in court, seeking justice for her father’s death. Despite the heartbreak, Eva showed resolve, making a powerful victim impact statement. Ashley was convicted of manslaughter after the court deliberated her case.
Eva has since turned to creating TikTok content and running her apparel company, Ghost Cowboy, based in Charleston. Reflecting on her past, she expresses gratitude for the lessons her father taught her, wishing Doug had left the harmful situation before tragedy struck.
