The Evolving Influence of Organized Labor in 2026

Despite a decline in its influence over the years, organized labor is finding new supporters from both the Left and the Right. In 2026, labor politics faces significant challenges nationwide. Several major private-sector union contracts are set to expire towards the end of the summer.

Among these are agreements involving 20,000 Verizon workers located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Additionally, 25,000 steel-mill workers in the Midwest are affected by the impending contract expirations.

Earlier in the year, a significant strike was narrowly averted. Stop & Shop reached an agreement with 28,000 food workers based in New England, thereby avoiding disruptions. These developments highlight the significant role and ongoing challenges faced by organized labor in the current political landscape.
