Tensions Between Knicks Owner and NYC Mayor Over Game Watch Parties

In New York, the anticipation for a pivotal New York Knicks game is marred by a dispute between team owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The conflict centers around canceled plans for a watch party outside Madison Square Garden, a popular event during this year’s playoff games. The NYPD cited President Donald Trump’s presence as the reason for canceling Game 3’s party.

Dolan decided not to hold a watch party for Game 4, which was expected to host 1,000 ticketed fans, stating it involved more than just that small number. ‘This is about celebrating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the heart of basketball,’ Dolan told WFAN. He argued that the mayor and commissioner’s offices were thwarting this celebration.

However, Mayor Mamdani went on social media around 5 p.m. ET to clarify that MSG had limited its permit request to accommodate 500 to 999 fans, suggesting that Dolan himself canceled the watch party. Madison Square Garden responded critically to Mamdani before Game 4, noting that restricting access to only 1,000 fans would exclude the larger community eager to celebrate the Knicks. The Garden’s statement emphasized fairness as a reason for the cancellation, considering the much larger fanbase.

An application revealed by The City Reporter indicated MSG had the option to apply for a permit without specifying an exact number of attendees. Meanwhile, city-hosted events, like a watch party in Bryant Park, led to disruptions, a common occurrence during the Knicks’ Finals journey. Street closures have been enforced for all NBA Finals games, with Dolan commenting on the extreme difficulty of entering Madison Square Garden compared to high-security areas.
