Newly released video footage from an officer’s body camera and a surveillance camera at a Texas running track depicts the aftermath of a fatal incident involving a teenage athlete. The event occurred during a high school meet last year, when a 19-year-old, Karmelo Anthony, fatally stabbed a rival team member, Austin Metcalf, aged 17, in the stadium bleachers. The court convicted Anthony of murder on June 10 and sentenced him to 35 years in prison. The jury dismissed Anthony’s self-defense claims.
The videos, which the Collin County court released after the trial, offer evidence of the incident. Surveillance video captures the track and bleachers on a rainy day. A figure, wearing a gray sweatshirt, suddenly appears from behind a yellow tent and runs down the steps. The silent video shows the individual falling at the bottom of the bleachers, then continuing to run along the fence separating the bleachers from the track.
The figure pauses briefly, seemingly glancing back at a pursuer, then continues running. After partially circling the track, he meets an unidentified person. After a brief exchange and a hug with the individual, they resume walking and are joined by another person. Following further discussion, Anthony approaches a fence, appearing to encounter a police officer.
The officer handcuffs Anthony and leads him toward a police cruiser. Anthony complies with the officer’s commands but begins to cry, exclaiming, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to. He put his hands on me.” The officers escort him to the cruiser and place him inside.
