Sylvester Stallone Discusses Challenges of Modern Hollywood

Actor Sylvester Stallone recently shared his thoughts on the challenges of making a career in today’s Hollywood. During an interview with Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning, held at 92NY, he expressed doubts about achieving the same level of success he enjoyed years ago.

Stallone reflected on how the industry has changed drastically over the past 50 years. He noted that actors look and act differently now, and the subjects they tackle are not ones he relates to. This shift, according to Stallone, would make it difficult for him to thrive as he did when he starred in films like “Rocky.” He even compared this shift to recasting a classic like “The Godfather” in the present day.

“No. It’s a whole different mindset. The actors look different, they act different. The subject matter, I couldn’t relate to,” Stallone remarked.

The conversation also touched on Stallone’s alternate career path had “Rocky” not been the success it was. He humorously mentioned that he would have ended up in a prison cell or working in agriculture with horses, as he felt a kinship with animals.

After its 1976 release, “Rocky” became an international phenomenon, grossing over $225 million on a modest budget. Stallone both wrote and starred in the film, receiving Oscar nominations for best actor and best original screenplay. Its triumph laid the foundation for a lasting franchise and cemented Stallone as a major Hollywood action star.

Stallone shared that he lives by Murphy’s Law, the proverb stating, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” This mindset, he believes, contributed to the success of “Rocky.” He revealed that, when staying at a hotel with his wife, Jennifer Flavin, he memorizes the steps to the fire escape, ensuring awareness of the route in case of emergencies.

The actor and Flavin, who married in 1997 after meeting in 1988, share three daughters: Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet. Though Flavin filed for divorce in 2022, the couple reconciled a month later.

Stallone is now preparing for the release of his memoir, The Steps, set for September 29. He described taking the first step as the most significant event in his life, emphasizing the commitment to continue climbing until physically unable.
