When Americans defend free markets, they look at tangible outcomes and references from economists. In contrast, those supporting communism often neglect historical evidence, disregarding individuals who lived through such regimes. This deliberate omission is dangerous because survivors are living proof of communism’s harsh reality.
A recent gathering in the Capitol brought together survivors of communist regimes from several countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, the Soviet Union, and China. These individuals shared their experiences, such as enduring torture, witnessing societal decay, and observing educational systems used for indoctrination, as well as churches viewed with hostility.
The Warning from Men Who Escaped Socialism
One compelling testimony came from José Daniel Ferrer, who spent over a decade in Cuban prisons, suffering from severe abuse and malnutrition. Ferrer’s account reveals the manipulative tactics used by communists to maintain control, noting that leaders like Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez initially masked their true intentions until they secured power.
Similarly, Daniel Di Martino recounted his family’s hardships in Venezuela. Before the Bolivarian Revolution, they led a comfortable middle-class life, which transformed into a desperate situation marked by scarcity and rationing. Under state control, citizens faced restrictions even in basic activities like shopping. This highlights how government control can slowly infiltrate daily life, stripping away personal freedoms.
Subjugation Beyond Physical Control
Communism doesn’t solely focus on the control of physical needs. Mike Gonzalez shared his experience in Cuba, where the regime suppressed religious practices and coerced citizens into ideological conformity. He was interrogated at a young age for attending church, emphasizing how the state seeks to dominate thought and suppress independent beliefs.
The regime teaches citizens to despise their country’s traditions, portraying institutions as corrupt to justify their dismantling.
Pastor Ezra Jin’s story further illustrates this point, highlighting his arrest in China for practicing his faith. Despite constitutional promises of religious freedom, the Communist Party prioritizes its authority over the law, leading to Pastor Jin’s arrest alongside other church leaders, showcasing the fragile nature of rights in oppressive regimes.
The Consistent Threat of Communism
Communism uses a familiar strategy: discredit institutions that limit authority, undermine economic freedom, and oppress education and religious practices. Survivors bear witness to the grim reality. They reveal the harsh truth of life under such regimes, challenging the notion that future attempts could yield different results.
Before accepting the promises of politicians who identify as “Democratic Socialists,” heed the warnings of those who have lived under similar leadership. Their stories offer crucial insights into the potential dangers of concentrated power.
