Chief Justice John Roberts commended Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch after tensions with President Trump’s administration. Bunch, 73, decided to retire following disputes over the portrayal of U.S. history at the Smithsonian.
The Trump administration criticized the National Museum of American History in a report released in July. As chancellor of the Smithsonian, Roberts appreciated Bunch’s commitment to excellence in recounting the nation’s history. He credited Bunch with providing wisdom and leadership that greatly benefited the institution.
“He pursued excellence in the telling of our nation’s story,” remarked Roberts.
Previously, Bunch had countered the White House’s criticism, asserting the report mischaracterized the museum’s efforts. He emphasized a dedication to scholarship, accuracy, and a comprehensive narrative of America’s history. His internal communication to staff affirmed their commitment to understanding and growth.
Bunch faced pressure from the White House. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley warned of potential loss of artifact access and federal grants under current leadership.
Bunch noted a “room for improvement” but defended the institution’s work against accusations of ideological bias.
The administration also raised concerns about Smithsonian leadership’s compliance with Federal antidiscrimination laws. They alleged the existence of a hostile work environment and potential misconduct based on race and ethnicity.
