Stephen Baldwin, once poised to become a Hollywood star, chose to step away in favor of his faith. In a candid conversation, Baldwin, 60, reflected on his rise to fame following his performance in the 1995 film, “The Usual Suspects.” Despite the success, he chose not to pursue stardom.
Baldwin shared with People, “I could have aimed to become a big star, but that wasn’t me. I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise and chase $100 million at the box office. I’d rather remain a regular guy from Massapequa.”
His departure from Hollywood was influenced by his conversion to born-again Christianity in 2001. Baldwin recounted how a Brazilian housekeeper, hired by him and his wife Kennya, claimed divine guidance led her to work for them. She believed they would eventually embrace Christianity and start a ministry.
Initially skeptical, Baldwin’s perspective shifted after attending evangelical events with his sister and witnessing an inspiring Christian skateboarding ministry. These skateboarders would perform and preach to captivated crowds, which resonated with Baldwin.
This experience led him to create “Livin’ It,” a skate video with a Christian message. Within six months, 10,000 copies were distributed. Interest grew when larger churches sought to host live events featuring skaters from the video, prompting Baldwin to leave Hollywood. He engaged with 125 churches over four years, captivated by the message of Jesus and the holy spirit.
Although Hollywood often viewed Baldwin’s outspoken religious and political views as unconventional, he continues to receive messages from people who appreciate his impact on their lives. Now at 60, Baldwin feels blessed and optimistic about the future.
Currently, Baldwin enjoys his role as a grandfather and works on faith-centered projects. He produces films for younger audiences and hosts a podcast, “One Bad Movie,” where actors share challenging film experiences.
Reflecting on his life, Baldwin stated, “I’ve done 100 movies, earned more than I imagined, and I’m married to the most beautiful woman. Jesus remains my foundation, and my wife, my anchor.”
