Stephen A. Smith Warns of Hasan Piker’s Impact on Democrats

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith expressed concerns about Hasan Piker’s growing influence on the Democratic Party during a discussion with POLITICO host Dasha Burns. Smith cautioned that Piker could become a liability for Democrats in general elections, as his influence might extend beyond the progressive base and offer Republicans a chance to criticize candidates associated with him.

Smith observed that Piker’s expanding political presence could ultimately harm Democrats. He stated, “It’s going to contaminate the electorate on the left side of the aisle. It’s going to come back to haunt them.” These comments stem from the notion that Piker’s relationship with Democratic candidates could be weaponized by Republicans.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has already taken steps to leverage Piker’s connection to Democratic candidates as a critique of the entire party. Natalie Baldassarre, the RNC national press secretary, commented to Fox News Digital that Democrats were reluctant to address Piker’s influence, particularly as Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed dealt with criticism after campaigning alongside the streamer.

El-Sayed is a terrorist sympathizer and an America-hating socialist Baldassarre stated. Her remarks underscored El-Sayed’s refusal to distance from what she described as radical ideologies linked to Hasan Piker.

Smith’s warnings about Piker’s role in Democratic politics have gained attention during an important Senate race. A Fox News poll in Michigan showed Republican nominee Mike Rogers leading El-Sayed, though the race was within the poll’s margin of error. While the nominee had significant support from self-described Democratic Socialists, backing from non-DSA Democrats and independents was notably lower.

Amid the scrutiny, El-Sayed defended his engagement with Piker’s audience. “Three million people listen to Hasan,” El-Sayed explained. He emphasized the importance of offering those individuals a pathway into the electoral movement, despite disagreements with some of Piker’s views.

Smith summarised El-Sayed’s approach as trying to attract Piker’s audience, rather than endorsing Piker himself. Smith further remarked that Republicans might use Piker’s rhetoric and associations with Democratic candidates as a strategic point in general elections.

Recent issues have prompted El-Sayed to distance himself from Piker after the streamer faced backlash for comments about Israel and American Jews. Despite endorsing El-Sayed and attending various campaign events, Piker has been at the center of controversies, including a retracted statement from 2019 about “America deserved 9/11.” Fox News Digital reached out for further comments but received no immediate response.
