Washington Commanders wide receiver Stefon Diggs incurred a 15-yard penalty after scoring a touchdown during Sunday’s Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
After receiving a touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels, Diggs ran through the end zone and leaped onto the goal post. This action led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, moving the Commanders away from a favorable position for a two-point conversion attempt.
Head coach Dan Quinn indicated that the team initially planned to attempt a two-point conversion. With the penalty, they opted for an extra point instead, reducing the Eagles’ lead to 17-16.
Philadelphia ultimately secured a victory with a final score of 24-22.
“As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot,'” Diggs shared with reporters postgame. “I’ve been playing for a long time, and celebrations like that were once allowed. I need to improve.”
Diggs’ debut for the Commanders ended with four receptions, accumulating 55 yards and a touchdown.
Washington aims for a rebound in their upcoming Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
