Social Security Payments and Upcoming Adjustments

Social Security Payments and Upcoming Adjustments

Social Security checks are set to be distributed to millions of Americans this week. Over 75 million individuals benefit from Social Security in various forms, such as retirement, spousal, survivor, or disability benefits. These payments occur monthly, in a single lump sum. They do not arrive simultaneously for all beneficiaries. The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a staggered payment schedule. Payment timing depends on factors like birth date and benefit type.

Payment Schedule

This week, recipients with birthdays from the 1st to the 10th will receive payments on Wednesday, September 9. This covers those with retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are made at the beginning of the month. Those who receive both SSI and another type of benefit should have already received their payment on Thursday, September 3.

Upcoming Payment Dates

  • September 16: Payments for birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
  • September 23: Payments for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.

Retirement payments vary based on lifetime earnings and claiming age. In 2026, the maximum monthly retirement benefit is $4,152 for someone retiring at full age with maximum taxable earnings. For those starting benefits at age 62, the maximum is $2,969. If collecting begins at age 70, the amount rises to $5,181. The full retirement age in 2026 is 67.

Most receive less than these maximum amounts. As of July 2026, the average retired worker received $2,085.98 monthly. Across all beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and those on disability, average monthly benefits totaled $1,940.08. Disabled workers averaged $1,635.27, and non-disabled widows or widowers received about $1,932.74.

Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) 2027

Soon, beneficiaries will learn more about the 2027 payment rise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will release August’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on September 11. This is part of the three-month review to determine the next year’s COLA. Current projections indicate a 3.6% increase in 2027 from The Senior Citizens League, while AARP predicts 3.5%. Both are above the 2.8% COLA for 2026.

The COLA counters inflation’s impact on benefits. The SSA uses the CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for this. It compares the average CPI-W from July, August, and September to the same months the prior year. The percentage increase forms the COLA. If prices remain unchanged, there is no adjustment. July marked the beginning of 2027’s calculation; August’s figures will soon follow. The final reading is on October 14, when the official 2027 COLA will be declared. Payments for December 2026, received in January 2027, will reflect this increase.
