Kareem Elrefai, part of the Democratic Socialists of America’s national political committee, observed a surge of memes and discussions in group chats across cities like Detroit, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Memes included a dramatic portrait of Mayor Mamdani with the phrase, “Are you enjoying the show? Refill your popcorn,” along with a video featuring parenting influencer Ms. Rachel and Mamdani, mimicking a crying gesture in response to the debate over a tax on multimillion-dollar second homes.
Annie Wu Henry, a social media strategist for Democratic candidates, remarked on how Mamdani challenges the stereotype that progressive leaders lack governing capability despite their strong ideas and momentum.
However, those involved in the city’s financial policymaking process found the online portrayal detached from reality. The viral narrative glossed over the complexities and difficulties associated with New York City’s financial challenges, presenting a skewed fairy tale perspective.
