Smithsonian Selects Arts and Industries Building for New Museum
The Smithsonian Institution has made a significant decision regarding the National Museum of the American Latino. On Monday, the institution revealed plans to host the museum in a historic 145-year-old building located on the National Mall. This choice avoids the need for congressional approval, which would have been required for constructing a new facility.
The Arts and Industries Building, a notable Victorian structure adjoining the Smithsonian’s headquarters, will serve as the museum’s new home. This redbrick building spans 258,000 square feet, offering ample space for the museum’s collection and exhibitions.
Regents’ Decision Provides a Permanent Location
The Smithsonian’s Board of Regents made the decision in a vote held on Monday. This marks an essential development for the National Museum of the American Latino, which was established by Congress in 2020 but has lacked a permanent location.
This move ensures that the museum will have a dedicated space to showcase the rich and diverse heritage of American Latino communities. The choice of an existing building, rather than a new construction, aligns with the institution’s strategic planning and resource allocation.
