Severe Storms Cause Widespread Power Outages Across Multiple States

Strong storms this week caused power outages affecting customers from Oklahoma to Connecticut. On Sunday, many awaited the return of electricity amid forecasts of more inclement weather.

More than 800,000 customers in the United States were still without power on Sunday following the storms. States like Oklahoma, Connecticut, and areas in between experienced these disruptions. The forecast indicated further severe weather was expected in parts of the southern and eastern United States, threatening with high winds and rainfall.

According to PowerOutage.com, which monitors outages, the largest number of power failures occurred in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York on Sunday. New York had approximately 85,000 customers without power.

New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, used social media to caution residents about the intense heat, noting a World Cup match between Brazil and Norway was set for Sunday afternoon in nearby New Jersey.

“These past few days have been scorching, back-to-back 100-degree days, brutal humidity,” he noted, mentioning that the city’s cooling centers were operational.

Chris Hoenig, from Jersey Central Power and Light, reported restoration of power to 210,000 of the 294,000 New Jersey customers affected by outages over Friday and Saturday. He assured that most remaining customers would regain power within the next three days.
