A Senate Republican recently expressed concerns that former President Donald Trump’s decisions might jeopardize GOP control of the Senate. This issue marks a continuation of the tension between Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina and Trump, which began with the Republicans’ attempt to pass a major bill from the former administration.
Trump accused Tillis on Truth Social of being overly critical. “When I informed him that I would not endorse his future candidacy, he withdrew from the race and declared his retirement,” Trump stated. President Trump further criticized Tillis, calling him a ‘quitter’ rather than courageous.
Tillis, outspoken since his decision not to run again, has directed his critiques at Trump’s top advisors. He criticized Trump’s administration decisions regarding the nearly $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund, blaming key officials for various controversial policies. Among his criticisms were decisions affecting housing, military leadership, and international accountability.
“If opposing these policies labels me as a RINO, I accept it,” Tillis remarked, emphasizing the need for the Republican Party to perform well in upcoming elections.
White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales countered the criticism, stating that Trump remains a leading figure and motivator for the party. She highlighted several achievements, including border security, tax cuts, and crime reduction.
Despite these claims, the ‘anti-weaponization’ fund has stirred discontent among Senate GOP members, affecting immigration operations funding. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche asserted a commitment to integrity in prosecutorial procedures, countering concerns about abuse of the fund.
Tillis further voiced apprehensions about the potential misuse of this funding, particularly related to those involved in the January 6 Capitol incident. “A fund set up to compensate individuals who attacked police officers? How does that sound rational?” Tillis questioned.
