The San Francisco 49ers faced a challenging offseason in 2025. The team lost Deebo Samuel and announced Brandon Aiyuk would not return, leaving a gap in their wide receiver lineup. To support quarterback Brock Purdy, the 49ers made strategic moves by drafting De’Zhaun Stribling in the second round and signing Christian Kirk as a free agent. However, the most significant acquisition was two-time All-Pro Mike Evans.
Mike Evans, who spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since being drafted seventh overall in 2014, joined the 49ers. In an NBC Sports interview with Laura Britt, Purdy expressed enthusiasm about playing with Evans. Purdy acknowledged Evans’ high expectations, especially having played alongside Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady. “Just being around him and understanding what it takes to play with him. The good pressure he brings, demanding success, and greatness, is what I love,” Purdy said, referencing his previous experience with players like George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey. He appreciates having a big target in Evans and values the insights Evans shares from playing with quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield. “We’re going to continue building chemistry, and it’s going to be good,” Purdy added.
Evans agreed to a three-year contract valued up to $42.4 million. Despite injuries last season—a hamstring strain, concussion, and broken clavicle—Evans managed 30 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns. His presence is expected to be crucial moving forward.
The 49ers’ performance last season highlighted their need for a strong receiver. They narrowly overcame the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild-Card Round but fell decisively to the Seattle Seahawks, 41-6, in the Divisional Round. During the Seattle game, Jauan Jennings led the team’s wide receivers with just two catches for 23 yards. Evans’ addition aims to change that dynamic and boost the team’s prospects in the upcoming season.
