The New Orleans Saints have decided not to pursue any significant changes at the quarterback position as they prepare to finalize their 53-man roster by Sunday’s deadline.
Tyler Shough, now in his second year with the team, is expected to be the starting quarterback. Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson will provide backup support. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Rattler will remain on the initial 53-man roster. The Saints have received inquiries regarding Rattler’s availability, but they intend to retain him as the second-string quarterback, following Shough.
Rattler, 25, joined the team as a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Over two seasons, he has participated in 16 games, starting 14 of them. He has amassed 2,903 yards, delivering 12 touchdowns along with 10 interceptions.
Rattler enjoys high regard among his teammates. Earlier this year, wide receiver Chris Olave expressed support for Rattler’s potential as a starter, emphasizing his capabilities. Olave stated, “Spencer’s a great quarterback — I don’t believe he’s a backup quarterback in this league.” He further added, “I feel like Spencer’s done a great job when he was back there starting at quarterback. He deserves another opportunity to be able to be a starting quarterback in this league.”
Despite Olave’s remarks and other teams’ interest, Rattler will remain with the Saints unless something changes. He entered last season as the starting quarterback but, by October 28, Shough took over. Shough ended the season with a 5-4 record as a starter, completing 67.6 percent of his passes, accumulating 2,384 yards, and achieving 10 touchdowns with six interceptions.
