Traveling with an iconic sports trophy presents unique challenges. Ryan Fox, the Champion Golfer of the Year, experienced this when he attempted to board a commercial flight with the Claret Jug after triumphing at The Open at Royal Birkdale.
The day after achieving major champion status can be chaotic, and dealing with airport hassles only adds to the stress. Following his victory, Fox, a New Zealander, embarked on a journey from Manchester to London, departing from Heathrow Airport to return home.
After successfully passing through security with the Claret Jug housed in a protective case, Fox reached his departure gate. There, he realized he needed to negotiate taking the trophy onboard as a carry-on rather than checking it at the gate. Fox recounted the experience during ‘The Smylie Show,’ describing his interaction with the gate agent.
“I meekly approached the check-in agent with two boxes and said, ‘I have some special cargo, is there any chance I can take these on the plane?’ When she asked what was inside, I explained, ‘The Claret Jug, the oldest trophy in golf.’ After confirming my win, she allowed me through without issue,” Fox recalled.
Being recognized by fellow travelers likely aided his request, allowing him to carry the trophy onboard. In an unusual twist, Fox was seated directly behind Cameron Young, the runner-up at Birkdale, further highlighting the uniqueness of the situation.
