Background on the Wedding Expenses
Bettina Anderson, wife of Donald Trump Jr., responded to reports by ProPublica about their wedding celebrations. The investigation mentioned that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, close to Vladimir Putin, financed significant aspects of the festivities, including renting a private island and a fireworks show. Payments were funneled through IB Challenger, linked to the International Boxing Association (IBA).
Anderson’s Response
In a detailed Instagram post, Anderson clarified that the financial assistance was for separate celebrations after the main wedding. She emphasized that the gift was a personal gesture, not politically motivated. Anderson expressed gratitude for Kremlev’s generosity, underscoring that such gestures need not come with political motives.
She labeled the report as “fake news,” denying any conspiracy or mystery. Anderson also shared photographs to support the accuracy of her narrative. The wedding itself was a private family affair, followed by planned celebrations.
ProPublica’s Investigation
ProPublica reported that Umar Kremlev paid for many aspects of the wedding event, with details confirmed by reviewed documents and interviews. Their report noted the conspicuous presence of a Russian delegation at the celebration, largely missing from the couple’s released images. Trump Jr.’s spokesperson classified Kremlev as a personal friend, not a business figure.
Profile of Umar Kremlev
Umar Kremlev, originally Umar Lutfulloyev, had prior convictions and affiliations with influential groups. He became president of the Russian Boxing Federation in 2016 and took over the IBA in 2020 amid financial and corruption issues. Under his leadership, IBA obtained substantial sponsorships from Gazprom, raising allegations of political influence. This led to the International Olympic Committee stripping IBA of its recognition in 2023.
Kremlev’s connections extended beyond boxing, involving significant roles in Russia’s sports betting and automotive industries, largely attributed to his ties to Putin. He later acquired Rolf, a major car dealership company. Kremlev has cultivated a public persona, shown in luxury outings and praises for controversial figures.
Despite potential sanctions due to Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Kremlev relocated parts of IBA operations to the UAE. His proximity to the Trump family includes hosting Donald Trump Jr. at an IBA event, with shared public appearances.
