Roblox’s Commitment to Safety Raises Controversy

Roblox aims to maintain a secure, healthy, and suitable environment for all users. A company spokesperson stated that some claims about the platform misrepresent its nature. The company is implementing advanced measures to set a new standard for online safety.

However, the company’s age verification has sparked debates, particularly concerning user privacy. Roblox’s vendor, Persona, claims to delete biometric data post-age verification. Yet, some users find ways to circumvent or inaccurately estimated their ages.

Globally, age estimation tools grow in popularity as social platforms face criticism for failing to safeguard children. These tools, however, have also received criticism from digital rights advocates. They argue that these tools could introduce new safety and privacy risks.

Angela Jacobs, a senior figure at Roblox, explained that the company uses AI technology to estimate ages based on facial features. On average, these estimates are accurate within 1.4 years. Jacobs is optimistic about the technology’s improvement, asserting its precision over the traditional birthday drop-down list. She believes the self-declared age system is now obsolete.

Roblox provides appeal options for users assigned incorrect ages. They can update their age using government IDs. Parents can also adjust the ages on their kids’ linked accounts.

Additionally, Roblox employs continuous age estimation to check discrepancies between a user’s listed age and their behavioral age. It assesses patterns like playtime, game choices, and chat language. Teen conversations often differ from those of older users.

“No system is perfect, but we strive to correct errors without enabling system abuse.” Angela Jacobs

Krista Carroll, a concerned parent, appreciates Roblox’s proactive measures for a secure digital environment. She believes more companies should adopt similar models to protect children.

Despite efforts to reduce harmful content, recent changes have caused tension in Roblox’s developer community. Roblox includes over 24,500 developers, many of whom create and publish games independently.

In a recent policy update, Roblox introduced new requirements for developers to publish games for users under 16. These include ID verification, two-factor authentication, and a financial deposit through a Roblox subscription or a 1,000 Robux fee per game. This aims to deter rule-violating games, which moderators often struggle to manage.

Though intended as protective measures, these rules have sparked backlash, especially from small developers unable to meet the costs. Jacobs explained that the financial obligation ensures developers are genuinely committed to the community.

“We aim to build the right friction to ensure developers are invested in publishing responsibly.”

Before gaining visibility under Kids and Select accounts, games must undergo a review process. Moderators evaluate gameplay for safety concerns or policy violations. Roblox engages with its Community Safety Council, receiving feedback from global creators. While some changes may invoke debate, Jacobs stands by the company’s vision of long-term safety and civility.

“Our long-term safety vision is crucial, even if not universally accepted,” said Jacobs.
