Hawaii Lt. Gov. Indicted on Bribery Charges
Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke faces criminal charges after a grand jury indictment for conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery, and falsifying candidate committee reports. These charges relate to a bribe she allegedly accepted as a state legislator in 2022. According to the indictment, local businessman and lobbyist Tobi Solidum offered Luke a $35,000 bribe linked to a COVID-19 testing contract involving a company he advocated.
Solidum, alongside former state representative Ryan Yamane, a Transportation Department official Ford Fuchigami, and Leo Asunción, a former public utilities commission official, was also indicted. The state’s Attorney General Anne Lopez conducted the investigation as part of a broader federal bribery probe.
Solidum represented the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii, which maintained contracts with the state to operate COVID-19 testing sites.
In early 2022, amid the impending expiration of his client’s contracts, Solidum allegedly met with Luke at a steakhouse, providing her campaign committee with two $5,000 checks. Prosecutors claim that Solidum promised more substantial contributions, allegedly suggesting to Luke they would reach $70,000 to support her campaign.
Luke has admitted to accepting these checks but denied any further financial influence or inappropriate decision-making regarding her legislative activities. She maintained, “I never granted special favors to a contributor” in a social media post, stressing her commitment to integrity and honesty throughout her career.
Allegedly, Solidum aimed to exploit Luke’s bid for lieutenant governor. The indictment suggests an intent to financially support her further, quoting Solidum saying, “All I gotta do is give her more money now.”
Reaction from Hawaii’s Governor
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has called for Luke’s resignation following the indictment. He expressed the need for the lieutenant governor to step down, urging this action to allow Hawaii to progress amid the legal proceedings. The governor highlighted this stance in statements to Maui Now.
