The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, led to an inspiring tale of humanity in Gander, Newfoundland. As the Federal Aviation Administration halted all US-bound flights, 38 international flights were rerouted to a small Canadian town. Gander’s residents generously opened their community to roughly 7,000 stranded passengers and crew members, providing comfort and care.
This act of kindness became the focus of the musical Come From Away. Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, it debuted on Broadway in March 2017. The show incorporates interviews and folk music to tell the stories of both locals and ‘plane people.’ The musical won several awards, including Drama Desk Awards and a Tony Award.
Sankoff and Hein discussed their experiences in Gander with CBS Sunday Morning. During their 2011 visit, they conducted interviews with residents and observed the community spirit. Both writers had personal connections to the events of 9/11, as Hein shared how New Yorkers took care of each other, reflecting the communal bonds seen in Gander.
“All of our neighbors came out and took care of us,” Hein said.
The musical’s roots trace back to a commission from Sheridan College. Sankoff and Hein navigated a myriad of narratives, drawing influences from musicals like A Chorus Line and Into the Woods. The stories of kindness and resilience resonated with them, leading to a dedication to faithfully represent the community’s actions.
Gander’s residents showed bravery through generosity, a theme universally admired. Hein remarked on the extraordinary, yet ordinary response from locals and its significant impact on passengers.
Despite an unfamiliar history for younger audiences, Come From Away continues to inspire new generations. Students have used the show to understand the global shifts post-9/11, exemplifying the power of kindness in adversity.
The musical’s real-life characters approved their depictions, ensuring authenticity. Sankoff and Hein maintained respect for privacy while highlighting the genuine narratives of unity and compassion.
The show’s debut in Gander was a moment of celebration. The locals embraced it enthusiastically, marking a memorable homecoming.
“Everything after that is a cherry on top,” Hein reflected.
During the COVID pandemic, Come From Away was captured live for Apple TV+. Amid lockdown uncertainties, the filming brought theater back to life, emphasizing hope and resilience.
The musical’s worldwide productions have sourced inspiration across different cultures, affirming a shared belief in kindness. Sankoff and Hein appreciate how these performances reinforce connections between communities.
Recently, on September 13, a live concert featuring former Come From Away cast members celebrated the 25th anniversary of 9/11 in New York City. This event commemorated the enduring legacy of camaraderie and support.
