Pope Leo XIV Advocates Against Assisted Suicide During Lourdes Pilgrimage

Pope Leo XIV Visits France on Historic Pilgrimage

Pope Leo XIV arrived in France for a significant four-day pilgrimage, including a visit to the shrine in Lourdes. Dr. Marc Siegel discussed the spiritual importance of the pontiff’s visit on ‘America’s Newsroom.’ During his time in Lourdes, the pope strongly advocated against medically assisted suicide and emphasized the dignity of human life.

Pope Leo XIV stated he was ‘very disappointed’ with Illinois’ law allowing assisted suicide. ‘Causing death is not normal. What is legal is not necessarily moral.’

On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV addressed a large audience in Lourdes. He affirmed the inalienable dignity of all humans and called for the rejection of assisted suicide, labeling it as ‘false compassion.’ He urged the healthcare community in Lourdes to focus on caring for the suffering rather than eliminating life.

Legal Status and Criticism of Assisted Suicide

Assisted suicide is legal in many Western countries, including France. However, it faces criticism, notably in Canada, where it is widely implemented. The Canadian case of Brigitte Stegemann, an 83-year-old woman who died under the country’s assisted suicide program, highlights ongoing debates about the practice.

Stegemann’s granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, shared her concerns about the program. Despite physical and mental decline, Stegemann had a good appetite following stomach cancer diagnosis and had initially rejected the idea of MAID.

Controversial Assisted Suicide Cases

During a second MAID assessment, Kranendonk observed the doctor using vague language, never mentioning death directly. When Kranendonk clarified her grandmother’s misunderstanding, the doctor assured Stegemann of freedom from pain.

Kranendonk later found her grandmother in tears, expressing regret and uncertainty about her consent to the procedure. The emotional distress surrounding these events underscores the complications and ethical concerns surrounding assisted suicide.

Pope Leo XIV’s visit draws attention to these issues and emphasizes the crucial role of faith and care in medical settings.
