Political Battle in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District

In Washington, D.C., political activity is a constant. Yet, the town of Washington in New Jersey holds significance in America’s political arena. Here, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has urged support for Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., aiming for re-election in the 7th Congressional District. This district hosts Trump’s Bedminster golf course, a notable landmark.

Johnson described Kean’s re-election as a crucial contest. ‘We consider this a top three race. It has a target on its back,’ he stated at Hawke Point Golf Club, noted by Fox News Digital. The district is a critical battleground in 2024, having seen tight results in previous elections. Trump won the district by two points in 2024, but it flipped to Democrat Mikie Sherrill by the same margin in 2025.

With Democrats fielding former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett, the race has grown more tense. The outcome may influence which party controls the House. Bennett aims to regain the district for Democrats.

Johnson outlined Republicans’ commitment to curb government spending. ‘Aggressive plans to tackle waste and excessive spending are in play,’ he said. A win for Democrats, however, could stall Trump’s objectives.

Kean expressed confidence. ‘I’ve been effective in listening to my constituents,’ he remarked. He criticized Bennett for partisanship. Yet, Bennett’s spokesperson, Carly Jones, highlighted Bennett’s diverse political coalition.

The event emphasized Kean’s legislative accomplishments under both Biden and Trump, showcasing bipartisan effort. His campaign materials mentioned him by name, intentionally omitting party affiliation.

Historically, the party in power suffers during midterms. Kean highlighted his bipartisan successes. He lauded both Biden and Trump, noting legislation signed by Biden.

Mark Teixeira, a former baseball star, joined the event to boost morale. Teixeira’s candidacy in Texas, coupled with recent far-left Democratic wins, concerns Republican leaders.

Kean faced a temporary absence due to depression treatment but introduced mental health legislation upon return. Bennett refrained from critiquing this, though she accused Kean of stock trading, claiming he profited during his term.

Bennett, a military veteran, criticized Washington’s issues, citing rising costs and healthcare cuts affecting NJ families. She stated Kean prioritizes stock trading over community service.
