Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom reported that Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud made offensive remarks toward him and cursed multiple times before security removed him from a game against the Indiana Fever. The incident occurred at Wintrust Arena, where Freedom cheered after a three-pointer by Sophie Cunningham.
According to Freedom: “Sophie Cunningham shot a three, and I put my hands up to celebrate. A couple of possessions later, Natasha came back, started screaming, and said, ‘She’s not gonna sleep with you.’ I responded, ‘I’m not trying to sleep with her. I’m here to support women.'”
Freedom said Cloud’s reaction intensified after seeing his shirt, which read, “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” He believes the shirt may have triggered Cloud. Despite Cloud’s angry remarks, Freedom maintained his focus on supporting women’s rights.
Video footage captured Cloud approaching Freedom, yelling and pointing late in the third quarter. When Freedom stepped onto the court, security and team members intervened.
Freedom expressed disappointment that such language was used in front of young fans: “She started to yell heavy language. I was shocked, given the number of kids present. Players admired by young fans should set a positive example.”
The confrontation occurred with 1:22 left in the third quarter after Cloud celebrated with her team. Freedom felt the situation’s root was deeper, not directly linked to the ongoing debate over transgender athletes in sports. He mentioned having prior arrangements with the Sky’s management about attending but was nonetheless removed without explanation.
Earlier, Freedom participated in a rally supporting Cunningham, who has faced protests for opposing transgender participation in women’s sports categories. Freedom announced plans to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, aiming to challenge the league’s eligibility rules, though he insists his actions are not anti-LGBTQ.
Freedom articulated his desire to compete against Cloud if drafted, though he does not expect to join the Chicago Sky. Instead, he hopes to join the Indiana Fever, citing the influence of Golden State Valkyries player Gabby Williams as a source of inspiration.
Freedom addressed ongoing misconceptions about his motives and affirmed that his campaign is about clarity and consistency in sports eligibility while respecting all groups. He stated, “This is not a political issue. It’s common sense.” Freedom emphasized his willingness to discuss issues directly with WNBA leaders.
Acknowledging some criticism, Freedom continues to receive support from other professional players intrigued by transitioning to the WNBA for better pay. He noted that conversations with numerous current and former players indicate growing interest in his path.
Despite receiving threats, Freedom remains committed to his cause, urging clarity and fair competition. He advocated for direct engagement with WNBA officials, ready to listen to their perspectives on the debate.
