Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is confronting a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge. Authorities claim he collided with a parked vehicle in Napa County, California, on Friday and drove away until his car became disabled.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident occurred in Yountville, north of San Francisco. Witnesses saw a brown convertible strike an unoccupied vehicle and continue driving. Deputies later identified the driver as 86-year-old Paul Pelosi.
During the investigation, Pelosi reportedly acknowledged hitting something but was unaware of the exact object, as stated by the sheriff’s office. He drove on until his car could no longer function.
Previous Incidents and Legal Proceedings
Paul Pelosi previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving in May 2022. He received three years of probation and completed various legal requirements. Unlike that incident, DUI was ruled out in the recent crash, with no alcohol detected during testing.
Investigation and Legal Steps
Investigators deemed Pelosi responsible for the collision. He wasn’t arrested at the scene, which is typical for similar misdemeanors. The Sheriff’s Office plans to refer the case to the Napa County District Attorney for review. A driver re-evaluation will also be submitted to the California DMV, a standard measure for elderly drivers.
Past Hammer Attack
Pelosi gained public attention after an October 2022 hammer attack in the San Francisco home he shares with Nancy Pelosi. David DePape, the attacker, received a life sentence on state charges, in addition to a prior 30-year federal sentence.
Continued Public Presence
Paul Pelosi remains in the public spotlight owing to past incidents and his connection to Nancy Pelosi, who has long represented San Francisco’s 11th congressional district.
