Outcry at Bard College Graduation Over President’s Remarks

At a recent graduation ceremony for Bard College’s high schools in New York and New Jersey, students expressed strong disapproval toward the outgoing president, Leon Botstein. This reaction followed his announcement of retirement after a closer than previously known relationship with Jeffrey Epstein came to light.

Leon Botstein, who will soon retire, faced boos whenever he was mentioned during the event, held at the United Palace in Upper Manhattan. His advice to graduates, particularly his statement, “To get anything done, you’re going to have to dance with the devil,” invited further heckling.

The students’ outcry grew so loud that Botstein paused during his speech, shaking his head. He commented, “The fifth piece of advice I would give is appropriate to your response: Don’t judge too quickly things in life.”

Botstein did not directly refer to Epstein in his remarks. Jennifer Strodl, a spokeswoman for Bard College, clarified that Epstein was not the subject of his comments. From 2012 to 2017, Botstein maintained contact with Epstein, despite a warning from a senior faculty member following Epstein’s conviction for solicitation of a minor for prostitution.

The college released a statement explaining Botstein’s intention to emphasize the importance of maintaining dialogue even with those who hold differing views. The statement highlighted the need for dialogue and debate to prevent societal division.

Several students believed his remarks hinted at the controversial financier, leading to their vocal protest against his past associations with Epstein.
