During the game against the USC Trojans, Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore sustained a concussion following a severe hit. Linebacker Desman Stephens II delivered the blow to Moore’s head as he slid early in the second quarter. For this action, Stephens was ejected from the game for targeting and received a one-game suspension later.
Moore exhibited the fencing response, an involuntary reflex that indicates a serious head injury. After the match, Moore was diagnosed with a concussion. Fortunately, both MRI and CT scans showed no additional injuries.
On Monday, Moore gave his first public response regarding the incident:
“To my team, the community, and to the World, thank you. These past 2 days have been difficult, but through all of your prayers, I have made progress. There are times I question myself and the Lord, asking, ‘Why now?’ but I quickly recall Jeremiah 29:11, ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ I can only focus on today and making sure I give today my full attention. I’ll be back soon. Go Ducks!”
In Moore’s absence, backup quarterback Dylan Raiola took the field, completing 289 yards and scoring two touchdowns. His efforts helped lead the Ducks to a 41-27 victory.
Oregon is set to play their next game against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, Oct. 10.
