Oregon Ducks Face Challenges in 2026 College Football Season

The Oregon Ducks were expected to compete for their first National Championship in the 2026 college football season. Under head coach Dan Lanning, the team had enjoyed strong recruiting successes and consistent performances in the Big Ten Conference. With the return of starting quarterback Dante Moore, Oregon aimed for a conference championship and a place in the College Football Playoff.

However, the season began with difficulties. A narrow victory over Boise State failed to boost confidence, followed by a significant defeat from an unexpectedly strong Oklahoma State team. Despite these setbacks, Oregon had a chance for redemption against the ranked USC Trojans in Los Angeles. Although Moore was injured due to a hit from a USC linebacker, the backup quarterback, Dylan Raiola, performed admirably, leading the Ducks to a 41-27 victory. Coach Lanning expressed his enthusiasm post-game, urging recruits from the Los Angeles region to choose Oregon if they prioritized winning.

Soon after, Oregon faced disappointment against UCLA, suffering seven turnovers in what was deemed one of the program’s most difficult games, resulting in a 17-15 loss. Additional setbacks followed when playing Illinois. As 10.5-point favorites, Oregon managed a brief lead before a 75-yard rushing touchdown by Aidan Laughery of Illinois. Oregon struggled offensively, with limited scoring opportunities, ultimately losing due to missed field goals and stronger opposing drives.

Despite facing challenges, including starting a backup quarterback and issues within the receiving corps, Oregon’s decline in performance questions Lanning’s future. With tough upcoming matches against ranked Northwestern, Ohio State, and Michigan, potential losses could prompt reevaluations. Although Lanning has led the Ducks to past successes, including playoff performances, expectations remain high due to significant investments in recruiting.

Although there might not be immediate changes this season, Lanning’s position as head coach appears vulnerable, given the rapid pace of change in college football. This does not bode well for a program with championship aspirations.
