Crews Work to Prevent Potential BLEVE
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation at GKN Aerospace following concerns about a potential chemical explosion. Crews aim to confirm whether the crack in the tank is relieving pressure, which would eliminate the threat of a boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE). Fire Chief McGovern stated crews would conduct overnight operations to check if the pressure has been released. An update is expected Monday.
Impact on Evacuation Zones
If pressure is released, the evacuation zone can be reduced, and efforts will focus on cooling the tank. Although a BLEVE is considered very dangerous, monitoring indicates that no toxic air has been released from the possible fissure, McGovern said.
Efforts to Neutralize Tanks
The Orange County Fire Authority reported Monday that one of three tanks was neutralized, but the remaining tanks, including the affected one, still pose risks. Initial reports of multiple cracks were dismissed, as current examinations show there is only peeling weather stripping with no active leaks.
Concerns and Risks
Fire incident commander, Division Chief Craig Covey, emphasized concerns about possible ruptures releasing toxic materials into waterways and subsequent explosions involving nearby tanks with methyl methacrylate. This incident is feared to be one of the most severe chemical threats in California’s history.
Evacuation and Resident Responses
Due to the potential blast affecting up to half a mile, 50,000 people have been evacuated. Orange County shelters are strained with anxious evacuees like Lydia Green, who expressed frustration due to lack of medication and essentials. Evacuees, including Jaden Gebeleinis, voiced anger over the proximity of hazardous facilities to residential areas.

The American Red Cross indicated that shelters are reaching their limit. No timeline has been established for residents’ return.
