Olivia Rodrigo emerged as a significant pop star at the start of this decade after her initial fame on Disney Channel. She introduced a new style of songwriting that was both personal and widely relatable.
Rodrigo’s hits like “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” have accumulated billions of streams. These songs reflect her unique blend of emotional power ballads and pop-punk energy. Her first two albums, “Sour” and “Guts,” featured songs that often addressed specific targets, directing her fury in a way that resonated with many young female listeners.
As she navigated her first major romantic relationship, Rodrigo crafted her third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love,” releasing on June 12. The album’s 13 tracks offer a detailed, real-time exploration of a relationship from its exciting start to its eventual end. Tracks like “Drop Dead,” which reached No. 1, capture the excitement of new love, while songs like “stupid song” and “u + me = <3" describe the thrill of falling in love. Other tracks, such as "Maggots for Brains," "My Way," "Begged," and "Cigarette Smoke," explore the complexities, realizations, and acceptance of a relationship's demise.
Rodrigo initially intended to write about newfound happiness without it becoming monotonous. This was challenging as she was known for her breakup and emotional songs. She expressed her thoughts in an interview with Popcast, a New York Times pop culture show, discussing her desire to prove she could craft songs she valued without relying on sadness.
Midway through creating the album, Rodrigo’s personal narrative shifted, leading her to revisit and revise some of the love songs with her producer Dan Nigro. They aimed to infuse these songs with honesty and a touch of melancholy.
