Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York criticized members of her party for supporting former President Joe Biden during his re-election campaign. In a podcast interview with Emma Vigeland, host of ‘The Majority Report,’ Ocasio-Cortez discussed the Democrats’ loss of credibility on democracy-related issues.
Vigeland highlighted concerns about the Democrat leadership’s approach, particularly focusing on their stance on the ‘genocide in Gaza’ and backing Biden without a primary challenge. ‘When Kamala Harris spoke about democracy, the party lacked the necessary credibility to counter perceived threats,’ Vigeland remarked.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez elaborated on this issue, indicating that certain aggressive Democrats who aimed to establish their narratives were the same ones who suppressed primary discussions when Biden’s candidacy was unchallenged. ‘Many were attempting to compensate for earlier actions and influenced Biden to step down as a form of litmus test,’ she observed.
Ocasio-Cortez remained supportive of Biden until he withdrew from the race in July 2024, amid growing calls from within the Democratic Party for a change in nomination following a problematic debate with Donald Trump. She maintained, ‘If you’re sure a candidate cannot defeat Trump, act on your conscience. I haven’t seen an alternative without significant risk.’
Therapist Jonathan Alter commented on potential voter disillusionment with perceived party hypocrisy, stating, ‘Mistakes can be forgiven, but not double standards. Such perceptions quickly erode trust.’
In the context of calls for a primary challenger, Ocasio-Cortez noted that several Democrats initially supported Biden but later distanced themselves due to the unpopularity of their strategies. Meanwhile, former Democratic lawmaker Dean Phillips started a primary challenge but faced considerable resistance from party leaders and didn’t gain much traction.
Phillips indicated his attempts were discouraged by Democratic leadership, with Hakeem Jeffries’ staff warning him about future communications with the White House if he proceeded with his challenge.
