Former President Barack Obama humorously commented that he occupies a ‘suite’ in President Donald Trump’s mind, implying Trump shows an unusual interest in him. During the “All the Smoke” podcast with former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, Obama addressed the continued focus from the Trump administration on him and reactions to negativity and racism directed his way.
“You’d have to ask him about his obsession,” Obama remarked. “I clearly have a room in his head, a suite in his head.” Barnes responded with, “Rent-free! You handle it all with grace.”
Obama reflected on his time as president, saying, “When I was president, I never had time to think about what my predecessor said or did. They’re no longer there; my primary focus was the job at hand.” He emphasized, “If you’re doing your job properly, you’re managing multiple difficult issues. Worrying about past presidents is curious and signifies a lack of focus on the responsibilities towards the American people.”
A White House spokesperson criticized Obama’s time in office, calling him “one of the most dishonest, divisive, and destructive Presidents in history.”
Obama also shared insights into Trump’s behavior in private conversations, suggesting they differ from his public demeanor. “I believe in dialogue. In person, Trump doesn’t act the same because he knows better,” Obama stated.
In a conversation with the New Yorker, Obama admitted thinking about opposing Trump regularly, but he refrains from commenting publicly, stating, “I’m not a commentator.” He mentioned that doing so would shift his role from political leader to commentator, a role he leaves to others like Jon Stewart.
The ongoing back-and-forth highlights the lingering tensions between the former and current presidents, with each offering their perspectives publicly.
